Project overview
Brief
The project, commissioned to SADF by, was part of their NGO's initiative to address the challenges faced by artisans losing their craft due to industrialization and commercialization of art and craft. The primary objective was to locate artisans who were considering abandoning their craft due to financial constraints. Over a span of 10 days, we embarked on a journey to document their stories and experiences, with the intention of raising awareness and facilitating connections between the artisans and potential buyers. We wished to help the vulnerable craft communities, very often left to one side despite India’s spectacular development. This rural population, mostly illiterate, with little visibility and having lost their traditional markets to the manufactured and counterfeit products, is clearly declining. With little interest for crafts, many techniques are dying out.
Idea
The core idea of the project was to capture the essence of the artisans' struggles and talents during our 10-day journey. Through meticulous documentation, we aimed to present their narratives in a serene and compelling manner. By showcasing the artisans' work and sharing their stories, we sought to create a platform that would connect them directly with individuals who appreciate and value traditional art and craft.
Result
The project yielded significant results in multiple aspects. Firstly, we successfully documented the entire journey, capturing the poignant moments and challenges faced by artisans. This documentation served as a powerful tool to raise awareness about the impact of industrialization and commercialization on traditional crafts. Additionally, the project enabled us to establish direct connections between the artisans and buyers who valued their work, providing them with a sustainable source of income. By showcasing the artisans' talents and building appreciation for their craft, the project helped to preserve and revitalize traditional artistic practices, ensuring their continued existence for future generations.
